Tango Colorado was founded in 1996, about a year after the first local dancers began to learn this incredible dance , Argentine Tango. Members numbered about 30 dancers. Today we have over 400 active members all over the state and over 800 on our two electronic mailing lists (TC News and TC Discuss). There are dances (called milongas) and practice sessions (called practicas) in Denver, Boulder, Ft. Collins, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and Aspen. We are one of the oldest Tango groups in the country, as well as one of the five largest and most active.
In 2001 Tango Colorado became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and in 2005 established a relationship with other Tier III organizations of the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) in the Denver Metro area. We received our first grant in 2006 and have started several outreach programs. We hope to continue to expose the community to the inspiring dance, music, and art of Argentine Tango.
Our goal is to grow this passion through classes, through neutral support of our wonderful member teachers, DJs and through performances around the region. This is not the “ballroom” dance that you see at dance competitions or that is taught at most commercial dance studios; rather this is the authentic Tango from Argentina, which is rarely seen competitively as it is generally danced socially. Argentine Tango is danced with extreme connection with and focus on your partner. We think it is an amazing dance, and once you are hooked, it is like no other dance in the world.

Some dance clubs meet in a variety of locations, subject to the interest and whims of the venue owners, which has contributed mightily to a steady decline of dance venues. Fortunately, Tango Colorado found a permanent home at the Denver Turnverein, a historic German Club located in the Uptown/Capital Hill area of central Denver, which has a fabulous 5,000 square foot ballroom and bar upstairs and a Rathskellar in the basement. At our Tuesday night practica, the ballroom plays host to a fundamentals class on one side of the room and guided and unguided practice on the other side. When the class ends, one side is available for serious practicing and the other side for practicing one’s “social dancing” skills.
